Heat, Humidity, and Hearing Aids: What You Need to Know

When most Floridians think about surviving the summer, they focus on staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen, and avoiding the midday heat. But if you wear hearing aids, there’s another important item to add to your summer survival checklist.

Florida’s combination of intense heat, high humidity, afternoon downpours, and outdoor activities can create the perfect storm for hearing aid problems. Fortunately, a few simple habits can help keep both you and your hearing aids in top shape all season long.

Humidity Is More Than Just Uncomfortable

Our famous Florida humidity doesn’t just leave us feeling sticky—it can also work its way into hearing aids. Moisture from the air, combined with sweat from outdoor activities, can affect microphones, speakers, and delicate internal electronics.

If you wear hearing aids, make it a habit to dry them overnight using a hearing aid dryer or dehumidifier. It’s one of the easiest ways to prevent moisture-related repairs and extend the life of your devices.

Pool Days and Beach Trips Require a Plan

Whether you’re spending the day at the pool, boating on one of Central Florida’s lakes, or relaxing at the beach, remember that hearing aids and water don’t mix.

Remove your hearing aids before swimming or showering, and keep a protective case with you so they have a safe place to stay while you’re enjoying the water. A few moments of planning can save you from an expensive repair.

Keep Them Cool

We all know not to leave children or pets in a hot car—but hearing aids shouldn’t be left there either.

High temperatures can damage electronic components, shorten battery life, and even warp plastic parts. If you wouldn’t leave your cell phone baking on the dashboard, don’t leave your hearing aids there either.

Watch Out for Sand and Dirt

Summer adventures often mean time at the beach, gardening, or hiking.  Sand, dust, and debris can clog hearing aid microphones and speakers, affecting sound quality.

After spending time outdoors, give your hearing aids a quick inspection and gentle cleaning using the tools recommended by your audiologist.

Stay Connected All Summer Long

Summer is a season filled with family gatherings, backyard barbecues, vacations, and community events. Your hearing aids help you enjoy conversations, laughter, and memories with the people who matter most.

By protecting your hearing aids from Florida’s heat, humidity, and outdoor elements, you’ll spend less time dealing with repairs and more time enjoying everything summer has to offer.
